Yesterday and the day before the two national translators (father and son) who recorded Luke and other NT books in Agarabi returned to re-record passages needing correction (See Blog entry for August 23rd).
I had already removed clicks and done all the fixes I could through editing tricks. It took Andy Weaver and me 9 hours to fix the trouble spots in just the first 15 chapters of Luke. Darasi and Sakias will be back next week to continue. These men are giants in the faith. They truly live with one holy passion—to see God’s Word in the language of the people and the people’s lives changed as they hear and are made alive in Christ—changed forever. They are not paid for their work and the area where they live is suffering from drought and a whole season’s crops were lost. They have planted a second crop in anticipation of the ‘taim long ren’, but they have no food in their villages now for themselves and their families. Yet they trust God and praise Him for providing all they need.
Darasi (now in his late 50s) had only a 6th grade education, but he came to Christ and took as his “walking stick” (life verse) Proverbs 9:10 “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom and knowledge of the Holy is understanding.” And the Lord has given him wisdom and understanding such that he is not only a trained pastor, but has been working on the Agarabi Bible translation for over twenty years, during which time he developed the orthography (what the alphabet would look like), determined which dialect of Agarabi would be best understood by the people, and translated several books (Mark and others) by himself.
When his son, Sakias, was young Darasi prayed that the Lord would place on his son’s heart a commission to finish the work (the OT translation). Sakias is now 32 years old and is not only a Bible translator, but a trainer of other translators through SILs Translation Training Courses. It is his life’s work to complete the Agarabi Bible. What riches to have a son who will carry on work that will last for eternity!
It was our joy to work with them and to be used by the Lord to bless them through hospitality. We were able to purchase store goods (staples, like rice and potatoes) and to share from our garden things for them to take home to their families, as well as to ‘break bread’ with them each day that they were here. Jon was also able to fix Sachias' laptop computer DVD drive while the re-recording was happening so that new or updated software could be installed.
What fellowship! And how much the richer we are! Oh, the lessons we are learning about the Kingdom of God!
