What I'll Be Doing

So, the new opportunity involves joining Wycliffe which my wife and I completed in May. Both of us will actually be working as part of this organizations support arm. I'd like to focus on what being an IT professional at Wycliffe will look like. Here's a brief rabbit trail of information about us.

My background in Information Technology is very broad and will allow me to work in most any part of the IT department. Initially I'm tagged as a "Multi-Skilled Computer Specialist" but that doesn't yet tell me what specific area I'll be working in: systems or network administration, help desk support, troubleshooting and repairs, training, application development, systems analysis, project management. I foresee that I'll be in a position where I'll be doing a majority of these, all at the same time. (Just like I do now for my current employers.)

The IT department works in a number of areas:
  • Computer Training (both Microsoft and Linux products as well as in-house developed software to assist tasks specific to this ministry organization)
  • Network services for the main center in one state and support for the several other offices, including some international offices
  • E-mail hub for both the ministry's organization and other related organizations
  • Computer repair and support desk
  • IT Engineering
  • Exploring application of IT tools (both hardware and software) to ministry tasks and identifying options for use in third world locations where the IT infrastructure is less than ideal
  • Wireless and Sat-phone communication services for missionaries in remote locations
All staff are volunteers or support missionaries. My wife and I will be working as missionaries and supported by friends and churches through donations to the ministry.

Perhaps I'll write more another time about impressions during my first visit to the ministry's support location when I spoke to some of the IT people. Our visit was a real eye-opener to my wife, Julie, too!

Not that I know a lot of details about this support arm at this early stage yet, but I'll also go into more detail later about what I might be doing and other places where we might be located when we start full time.

If you do have a question or comment, though, please comment away...
