An Honor Granted

Julie has been working this week with a group from the Usarufa language group, recording portions of the New Testament in audio format.  One of the unique aspects of this project is that one of the readers is a 12 year old boy named Leto.

Leto recording God's Word in Usarufa
Leto, a fourth grader, was in the first literacy class held in his village.  He did so well and is such a good reader of his "tok ples"  (village language) that the translators wanted to give him the honor to read some of the Bible as Julie and an associate recorded it.  Not only did he do well, he also was very patient while sitting hour after hour in the recording studio as others read their portions.

Julie rewarded him with an ice cream cone from the grocery store's "Kaibar", a version of a fast food counter where you can also buy chicken, chips (french fries) and (usually not available) hot dogs and hambergers.

Tonight was the middle school's band and choral concert.  Of course, most of the community shows out in force, including us.

Between the band and choral sections, Julie saw Leto sitting by himself.  On his own intiative, though only 12, he came to a "white skin" concert where strange music (to him) was being performed.  What a brave lad!

Julie invited him to come sit with us.  I had my camcorder with me and took this brief video of Leto, Julie, and a friend and fellow audio recorder, Karen.

Isn't that neat?
